How to Prevent Blocked Drains
Simple habits to keep your pipes flowing freely and avoid costly call-outs.
The Big "Don'ts"
- 1.Never pour grease down the sink. Hot fat looks liquid, but it solidifies in the cold pipe, creating a "fatberg" that catches other debris.
- 2.Wet wipes are not flushable. Even if they say "flushable" on the packet, they don't break down like toilet paper. They are the #1 cause of toilet blockages.
- 3.Coffee grounds. These heavy particles settle in U-bends and create stubborn sediment layers.
Smart Habits
- 1.Use a sink strainer. A cheap £2 mesh strainer catches food scraps before they enter your plumbing.
- 2.Collect fat in a jar. Let cooking oil cool in an old jam jar, then throw the jar in the bin.
- 3.Regular hot flushes. Once a week, pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down the sink to melt minor grease deposits.
